The Definitve Ranking of All 131 BSC Cover Outfits! [Jan. 9th, 2014|02:10 pm]
Baby-sitters Club Snark-fest!

Which one of you compiled this awesome list?

First, some ground rules:

- These outfits are ranked definitively from worst to best.

-All 131 original Baby-Sitters Club series books are included. F$%d the Little Sisters series.

-When more than one person appears, the cover is ranked based on the most noticeable/important outfit, as determined with a special secret science.

- Since Claudia Kishi is obviously a style icon, the bar is set higher for her and she has to work harder to compete with the other girls (at least when they actually put effort into their looks) to prevent her from just completely dominating the top 25. This is also known as the Dancing With the Stars rule.

This is amazing. I was reading it thinking whoever wrote it had to be a member here.

Two things strike me here: firstly, it's really cool to see how the fashions change from the 80s (The Truth About Stacey, The Ghost at Dawn's House) to the mid-90s (Stacey's Emergency - I had an identical blue oversized t-shirt) to the late 90s/early 00s (Abby's Un-Valentine).

Secondly, I can't help but notice that on the cover of Jessi's Horrible Prank, there is another black kid AND an Asian kid. Shut up, Jessi.

I stared at that one for like 10 minutes trying to figure out who the other black kid was. Is it Curtis maybe? But wait, Curtis was in grade 7...

And in the holidays one, suddenly tons of black kids are in town. I wonder if SMS isn't a charter middle school because, when it's convenient, there are a lot of kids of other races their age in town, yet none at SMS. Charter schools are public, but usually lacking diversity. I don't want to minimize Jessi's feelings, but there really are a lot of other black kids when it's convenient to the plot, and unless they disappear back into the wood works, then they've always been in that town somewhere.

I have to say, I'm to the criticism of Dawn on the cover of book 5. That's straight up just the 80s. I remember dressing like that in middle school and being considered trendy. I mean, it looks stupid today, but that was the height of fashion back in the day.

I got the impression that the author of this list had no idea about 80s fashion. Obviously that stuff is hideous by today's standards, but some effort was at least made to judge the '90s fashion by the '90s.

Any "Best Outfits" list that isn't topped by Abby's amazing velvet dress and pearls on #90 is LIES.

Although I do approve of the #1 on here. I just think Abby's dress should've been in the top ten, easy.

YES. that is my all-time favorite BSC cover outfit. I would totally wear that still.

One of the few times I liked Abby. That dress was awesome.

LOL. I completely disagree with the "Who plays softball in jeans?" thing for Kristy's outfit on the cover of Mind Your Own Business, Kristy! though. When I played (late 90s), a lot of us wore jeans because they were thick enough to keep us from skinning our knees at least some of the time.

And also a lot of kids' families didn't buy spendy baseball pants for a casual little team.

Was she actually playing though? If she's just coaching small children, she wouldn't likely be teaching them to slide into bases. She'd just be doing the basics. I was confused by her criticism of a COACH wearing jeans while coaching her team.

I disagree with a lot of this author's conclusions. Plus on a couple of covers she got the characters wrong, which is just annoying. I know the cover of "Dawn and the We <3 Kids Club" is a tad confusing since they're all blonde, but only one has very light blonde hair, so that's obviously Dawn.

I thought some of her commentary was off too - unnecessarily snotty. There's a fine line between funny snark and mean riffing. :(

Any list that doesn't immediately place Kristy and the Baby Parade as the worst ever (I don't care how cute Emily Michelle is, the whole cover offends my eyes so much that all I see is ugly) is automatically disqualified. :P

Yes. Agreed. I didn't think Dawn's denim on denim ensemble was the worst ever. I saw plenty of others that were much more fug than that. I think she just let her Dawn hate cloud her judgement.

I'm with you. She made no secret she hated Dawn. And Dawn's denim on denim was the height of fashion when that book was first printed. If you're going to write fashion critiques of the covers, at least have some fashion history knowledge to your credit. Many of the outfits she panned in the 80s/early to mid 90s were VERY in style and hot for the times. That's when I was in middle and high school. Oversized shirts were the thing. You couldn't buy skinny jeans back then, so the few times she credited Kristy or someone with wearing them, I was like, "This was 1992, they didn't HAVE them then!" Same goes for the "mom jeans". They weren't "mom jeans" then, they were the jeans you bought in the store because that's what the style was!

Can't help but be a bit disappointed it's just cover outfits. It'd be nice if someone went through and decided which was the most memorable of Claudia's outfits. Me, if forced to choose, would pick her Pebbles outfit. Everyone remembers that ensemble. Bonus points if you remember which book she wore it in.

I know it's horrible, but #115 shouldn't count. I mean, it's a WORK OUTFIT. How many people looked good in their high school/middle school work outfits?

The absolutely nailed it with no.22 on the list - Stacey’s Secret Friend:
"on the cover of this book, Tess is so clearly the coolest kid at school and the only one of the girls you’d even bother to hang out with in the first place. Pink overalls with a pink flowered shirt underneath, plus thick-framed black glasses?! Tess is a badass and Stacey needs help."
Could not have said it better my self. Tess 4 Life!

I love Tess because she's so much like me and a friend of mine. We rock the kawaii and pinkness and don't care what anyone else thinks :D

I totally predicted Mary Anne's Makeover, Jessi's Baby-Sitter, and Stacey's Lie as being in the top ten. I'm so proud of myself! Not feeling Keep Out, Claudia as #1 though - a great outfit, but not the top one.

I really want to know how the list author decided that the blonde in the green dress on Little Miss Stoneybrook... and Dawn is Margo Pike. I've spent at least 25 years being certain that Karen is the blonde on that cover.

Oh god this is beautiful. This will help me majorly because I now run a style icons column on Tumblr, and have been dying to use Claudia. FINALLY, excellent pictures of the Claudia outfits! Her outfit from Claudia and the First Thanksgiving should've been ranked WAY the hell higher than that though D: Of course her Keep Out outfit won, that's my favorite too :D

Also all the nope to Dawn's persistent use of mom jeans. >.< I thought she was supposed to be the "unique Cali cool" one. Mom jeans are so ~CALI FRESH~
